The Last King of Scotland

Recently, the place that I work has been showing all the Oscar nominated films in their private theatre. So I have been given the opportunity to watch many of the films. As you've already seen below, I had watched quite a few. A week ago, I find out that they were going to show The Last King of Scotland here at MGM. I was very unsure about the film. The only thing I knew about the film, was that Forest Whitaker did an amazing job portraying the real-life dictator Idi Amin. And as proof, he won an Oscar for it. Too bad his speech was kind of weak.

The Last King of Scotland is a story about a bloodthirsty Ugandan president, Idi Amin (Forest Whitaker). However, he is not the main character. The fictional character Nick Garrigan (James McAvoy) is. Nick is a boy who just recently finished medical school and decided to leave his home for some adventure as well as to help others. He decided to go to Uganda where he believes he'll do some good. Nick is placed in a small village where he treats local villagers. After hearing rave news about Amin, he finally gets to see the newly appointed dictator at a local rally. Nick is won over by Amin's speech about reform. Upon leaving the rally, he is suddenly rushed to Amin to aid his wounds from an automobile accident. Amin takes a liking to Nick and asks him to be his personal physician. Nick takes the job and enjoys his new life of luxury. However, that's when Nick finally realizes the truth about Amin.

I really thought the movie was great. I'm just sad that it didn't get much of a chance. Maybe because Forest Whitaker looks hella scary. I don't know. I really enjoyed it because it was half fun and brutal at the same time. You see this kid Nick get to party down and live the life of a star. Sex, drugs, and money. And it's great. But then when you see Amin go crazy. That's when it gets scary because you don't know what he'll do next. He truly pulls off a great performance.

Stetec - Takafumi Mori

I came across this animation a few days ago. I really enjoyed what the artist did with it. Has a cool rap song as a backdrop too. I don't understand a lick of Japanese but from reading the description it says Japanese satire on consumerism. Go peep out his website Takafumi for other animation goodies.
